Your website almost certainly has a sitemap.xml file. It probably doesn’t have an llms.txt file yet.
That gap is becoming one of the more overlooked reasons AI tools skip right past a perfectly good business.
— The Difference
A sitemap tells a machine where your pages are. An llms.txt file tells it what your business actually does.
— 01
What an llms.txt file actually is
An llms.txt file is a plain-text, markdown-formatted file that lives at the root of your website — yourbusiness.com/llms.txt — and gives AI tools a clean, direct summary of what your business does, who it serves, and where its most important content lives. Think of it as a briefing document written specifically for AI systems, not for human visitors or traditional search engine crawlers.
It’s a newer standard, proposed as AI tools started needing a faster, more reliable way to understand a website than crawling every page and guessing at relevance.
— 02
How it’s different from a sitemap or robots.txt
sitemap.xml tells search engines which pages exist.
It’s a list of URLs, mainly for indexing purposes — it doesn’t explain what any of those pages mean or which ones matter most.
robots.txt tells crawlers what they’re allowed to access.
It’s a permissions file, not a content summary.
llms.txt tells AI tools what your business is and what to pay attention to.
It’s the only one of the three written in plain language, meant to be read and understood rather than just parsed.
A website can have all three, and increasingly, should.
— The Risk
Businesses without one aren’t necessarily invisible — but they’re asking the AI to do more guesswork.
— 03
Why this matters right now
AI tools are increasingly the first stop for people researching a purchase decision — instead of typing a search query and scanning ten links, they’re asking ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google’s AI Mode directly and taking the answer at face value. Those tools have to decide, quickly, which businesses to trust enough to cite. A clear llms.txt file gives them a fast, unambiguous answer instead of forcing them to infer your business model from marketing copy scattered across a dozen pages.
Businesses without one aren’t necessarily invisible — but they’re asking the AI to do more guesswork, and guesswork is exactly where good businesses get skipped in favor of ones that made themselves easy to understand.

Do you actually need one
Probably, if any of the following is true for your business:
- You compete in a market where AI-generated recommendations already show up for your services. If ChatGPT or Google’s AI Overviews are already answering questions in your industry, you want to be one of the sources they’re reading.
- Your website’s messaging is spread thin across many pages. An llms.txt file gives AI tools a single, authoritative summary instead of forcing them to reconstruct your positioning from fragments.
- You’ve never tested how AI tools currently describe your business. If you haven’t checked, you don’t actually know whether you need this — which is itself a reason to check.
A very small number of businesses — extremely low-search-volume, hyper-local, word-of-mouth-only operations — may see limited near-term benefit. For most businesses with any kind of online discovery funnel, it’s a low-cost, low-risk addition.

How LGX helps
We built and published our own llms.txt file before we ever offered this as a service — it’s live right now at growwithlgx.com/llms.txt, and we tested it against real AI platforms before we trusted it enough to sell.
