If you’ve Googled your own business lately — or asked ChatGPT who the best roofer, lawyer, dentist, or contractor in your city is — and you didn’t show up, this is worth seven minutes of your time.

You’re not imagining it. And it’s not because your work isn’t good enough. AI tools like ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Gemini don’t find businesses the way Google used to. They aren’t crawling your website and ranking you by keywords — they’re synthesizing one confident answer from a small handful of sources they trust, usually two to five, and naming names.

That’s not a traffic problem. That’s a visibility infrastructure problem — and it’s fixable.

— The Shift

Search used to hand people a list. Now it hands them an answer — with your name on it, or someone else’s.

What’s actually happening when someone asks AI about your industry

When a potential customer opens ChatGPT and types “Who are the best home remodelers in Omaha?” the AI isn’t running a search and handing back ten blue links. It’s drawing on training data, recent web crawls, and structured sources to construct one answer, then citing the two to five sources it considers most authoritative and clear.

If your business isn’t one of those sources, it doesn’t matter how good your work is. You’re simply not part of the data the AI trusted enough to cite.

Why your business isn’t in the answer

There are five reasons this happens, and they’re almost always fixable.

  • Your website isn’t structured for AI extraction. AI systems look for clear, direct, question-and-answer content — not paragraphs of promotional copy. “We’re a full-service agency delivering exceptional results” tells an AI almost nothing useful about who you actually are.
  • You don’t have an llms.txt file. This newer web standard works like a briefing sheet for AI tools, telling them what your business does, who you serve, and where your most important content lives. Most businesses don’t have one yet.
  • Your business isn’t verified as a trusted entity across the web. AI tools cross-check your Google Business Profile, directory listings, reviews, and third-party mentions before deciding whether to trust you.
  • You don’t have FAQ or AEO content. FAQ pages built with the right schema markup signal to AI systems that your page has a clear, citable answer.
  • Your competitors are already doing this work. In most local markets, this gap is still wide open — but it’s closing fast.

None of these are complicated fixes on their own. Most are a matter of restructuring and adding to what already exists on your site — not starting over.

LGX has run AI discovery audits across businesses in dozens of industries and markets. The pattern is consistent: most don’t appear in AI-generated answers at all, regardless of how established they are or how strong their Google presence is.

— The Stakes

If your business isn’t in the answer, you don’t exist for that customer — no matter how good the work actually is.

Why this matters more than it did a year ago

AI-referred web traffic increased more than ten times in the United States between mid-2024 and early 2025. ChatGPT alone passed eight hundred million weekly active users. Google’s AI Overviews now show up on the majority of searches, and AI Mode is rolling out to every US user.

More than sixty percent of Google searches now end in zero clicks — the user gets an answer inside the AI response and never visits a website at all. If your impressions are holding steady but your clicks are dropping, this is very likely why.

What you can do about it this week

  • Run a manual AI audit. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode five to ten real questions your customers would ask. See who shows up, and who doesn’t.
  • Check your entity consistency. Your business name, address, and phone number need to match, word for word, across your website, Google Business Profile, and every directory listing.
  • Add real FAQ content. Use the actual question as the heading. Answer it plainly in the first fifty to seventy-five words. Add FAQPage schema markup.
  • Create an llms.txt file. It lives at yourwebsite.com/llms.txt and gives AI tools a clean map of your business.
  • Clean up your Google Business Profile. Accurate categories, current photos, and responses to every review.

None of these require a rebuild. They require attention — and most businesses haven’t given it yet.

How LGX helps

We built this on ourselves before we ever built it for a client.

Our own llms.txt file is live at growwithlgx.com/llms.txt, and it wasn’t theoretical — we tested it against real AI platforms before we trusted it enough to sell.

LGX offers Basic LLM Optimization starting at $500 one-time, which includes llms.txt creation, a framework for your FAQ structure, and basic guidance for AI discoverability. For a full build, On-Page AI Visibility Optimization ($925 one-time) adds structured FAQ development with schema markup, on-page content refinement, and a before-and-after AI audit showing exactly what changed. Both are also built into every LGX Digital Growth Package, starting with Launchpad at around $1,500 per month. You can see all options on the ai page under pricing.

— Common Questions

Questions about AI search visibility

Google’s AI Overviews tend to reflect changes fastest since they’re tied to live indexing. ChatGPT and Perplexity move more slowly, but businesses that make real structural changes typically see citation improvements within thirty to ninety days.
Usually not. This is almost always about restructuring and adding to what already exists — FAQ architecture, an llms.txt file, schema markup, and a handful of targeted rewrites are typically enough to move the needle.
Related, but not identical. Traditional SEO gets you ranked in a list of links. AI search optimization gets you cited inside the answer itself. The fundamentals overlap, but AI visibility has its own specific requirements most SEO strategies don’t cover yet.
More common than you’d think. Fixing it means correcting the source data — your website, Google Business Profile, and directories — and publishing authoritative content AI tools can cite accurately going forward. This is a core part of our AI Visibility Optimization service.
Largely, yes. Voice assistants like Siri and Alexa pull from many of the same underlying signals as AI answer engines — clear entity data, structured FAQ content, and consistent business information across the web. The same foundational work that makes you citable in ChatGPT also improves your odds of being surfaced through voice search.
